According to a new study, lip enhancements using hyaluronic acid-based gel are well tolerated and result in high satisfaction rates for long-lasting, natural-appearing lips.
Ulf Samuelson, MD, PhD and his colleagues from Stockholm, Sweden studied the safety and effectiveness of injections containing hyaluronic acid-based gels, which also contained lidocaine. These products included Q-Med AB and Restylane Lip Volume.
The study, which was an open label, multicenter, base lined-controlled study, included 30 patients between the ages of 18 to 60 years of age. The participants underwent the lip procedure, with retreatments being offered every three months.
During the nine-month study, researchers assessed the efficacy using a patient questionnaire, the Medicis Lip Fullness Scale, and the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale. Patients also used a 14-day patient diary to record any adverse events they may have experienced during the research. This was used to evaluate the safety level of these injections.
The study results showed that between 86% and 97% of patients studied, along with other independent evaluations indicated “improved” upper and lower lips during the nine months following the treatments. Additionally, during all study visits, 72% to 93% of subjects said they were satisfied by the outcomes of their lips. Also, 96% reported natural-appearing lips.
There were some common adverse reactions and events. These included injection site pain in 10% of the patients, mild-to-moderate local injection site reactions, implant site hematomas in 17% of patients, and finally, implant site mass in 23% of patients.
The researchers stated that the desire to have fuller lips among both women and men, along with the ready availability of non-surgical options to meet this demand, has increased in recent years. They stated that, “Overall, most subjects were satisfied with treatment results based on both Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale evaluations and the subject questionnaire, regardless of if they had been retreated or if they had treatment-related adverse events.”
Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of the Laser Lipo and Vein Center, echoed the findings of this study by saying, “We’ve seen an increase in the number of requests for lip enhancements at our practice, and this study is great news that the products being used are both safe and effective.”
