Probiotics Can Help Achieve Healthier Skin

featured3

Believe it or not, the skin and the stomach have a lot to do with each other. In other words, you need to look at the body as a whole. Consider this: If you are not feeding your stomach properly, then your body will not receive the correct nutrients for smooth, supple skin.

Recent studies indicate that it is no longer just a matter of getting the proper levels of basic vitamins; you need to actually feed your body “good” bacteria.  And yes, we mean bacteria!

Probiotics such as L. acidophilus can help the digestive system properly break down foods, as well as strengthen the detoxification system of the body.

With a healthy gut that contains good bacteria, along with antioxidants, there is an increase in the possibility of healthy, supple skin. To support this theory of skin improvement, the American Academy of Dermatology has stated that research indicates probiotic benefits may extend beyond the digestive tract to the skin.

According to Dr. Thomas Wright, medical director of Laser, Lipo and Vein Center, “There is a strong connection between chronic skin conditions and bad gut health.”  This connection is known as the gut-brain-axis. Within this axis, probiotics can help build skin immunity. Essentially with a healthy gut comes healthier skin.

He also states that using probiotics can help reduce skin irritations and decrease the symptoms of conditions such as acne. Patients who have acne-prone skin and/or rosacea have shown improvement through the use of daily probiotics. Dr. Wright indicates that combining traditional acne therapy with probiotics is providing successful results.

Other studies report that when consuming dairy beverages containing fermented bacteria acne lesion counts have been reduced.

Additionally, Dr. Wright indicates that probiotics can help manufacture key nutrients, as well as inhibit unhealthy bacteria and yeast growth. Other benefits of probiotics are the protection they provide against lactose intolerance, yeast infections, viruses, fungal and harmful bacteria growth, and, of course, your skin’s health and appearance will improve.

Dr. Wright and his staff are proponents of balancing science and art for more youthful, supple skin. If you are interested in understanding the effects of probiotics and how other healthy foods can affect your skin, Dr. Wright can answer your questions.
