While most moles are usually harmless, there are several signs that may indicate that medical attention is needed. For example, should a mole start to itch, bleed, grow, or present changes, it is important to seek medical advice. Moles are often linked to melanomas or other dangerous forms of skin cancer, so it is important to know how to tell if a mole is cancerous.
If you are a person who has moles, it is important that you do a mole check every few months to determine if there are any new moles or any changes to the existing ones.
The first line of defense is to do a self-check. If you cannot see a particular area, use a mirror to aid in the examination. Special attention should be paid to those areas that are often exposed to the sun.
The best time to do a mole check is after a bath or shower when your skin is wet. Having a full length mirror can help in a full body check. You should also check “hidden” areas such as between your toes and fingers, the soles of your feet, and the back of your knees.
Asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other half
Border: the border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred or irregular
Color: the mole has different colors or it has shades of tan, brown, black, blue, white or red
Diameter: the diameter of the mole is larger than 6mm – about the size of a pencil eraser
Elevation: the mole appears elevated or raised from the skin
If you do not see any changes in your moles over time, you probably have no need for concern. However, if you do see any of these symptoms or changes, schedule an appointment to be checked without delay.
