It’s commonplace in today’s world to speak frankly about our favorite or most effective cosmetic procedures in everyday conversations. Preventative Botox and other neurotransmitter injections, facial fillers, liposuction, or laser therapy are all conversations that no longer make us blush, but that wasn’t always the case. And one area of aesthetic plastic surgery that still feels taboo to discuss openly is one that may have the greatest impact on its patients – non-surgical aesthetic genital procedures for men and women alike, and both use to address sexual dysfunction through PRP treatments.
Dr. Wright and his team at the St. Louis Laser Lipo and Vein Center are proud to be on the cutting edge of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP). While PRP treatment has long been used in other areas of medicine, it’s recently been making incredibly safe and effective strides in the field of cosmetic medicine. A combination of innovative PRP techniques is being shown to benefit patients in a variety of ways including liposuction follow-up, as an addition to facial fillers, and as an overall skin rejuvenation treatment. PRP therapy has additionally been shown to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the body which can promote healing using a patient’s own platelets.
PRP therapy uses a patients’ platelet-rich plasma as a rejuvenating and healing serum to achieve desired cosmetic results. When a patient arrives in a physician’s office for PRP therapy or treatments, a small blood sample is taken which is subsequently separated using a centrifuge to isolate red blood cells from the platelets and serum. Once separated, the plasma and platelets are combined with growth factors and injected back into the patient at targeted sites. This injection stimulates the body to naturally produce collagen which over time adds volume, luminosity, and natural health to the skin.
Within this process, the platelet-derived growth factors are the key to success. Using the body’s own healing strategies to create cosmetic results is a safe and successful path towards overall rejuvenation. PRP treatment lets patients avoid the risk of allergic reaction as the process uses the body’s own platelets to promote skin rejuvenation and health. The natural collagen formed by the body as healing response is likely to create a healthier glow over time, leaving many patients feeling more youthful. This type of PRP treatment can be used on any and all skin types as are equally effective for men and women.
PRP also offers a wide range of benefits when used specifically to treat different forms of sexual dysfunction in both males and females. Both treatments utilize PRP treatment to address symptoms of sexual dysfunction and provide a more robust and enjoyable sex life for patients.
Sexual dysfunction is typically classified as experiencing some type of problem that impedes your ability to want or enjoy sexual activity. This can often be the result of hormone changes, aging, or for women as a result of childbirth.

Patients have reported a range of positive effects after treatment, including increased sensation, increased natural lubrication, decreased pain or discomfort, increased ability to have an orgasm through penetration, and greater arousal from clitoral stimulation. Additionally, the procedure is known to increase the appearance of smoothness in the skin of the vulva and even offers some women improvement in urinary incontinence.
During the procedure, PRP is taken from your own blood and then injected into the clitoris. Topical anesthesia and ice are usually used to numb the treatment area, and the injections often also contain local anesthesia to limit any discomfort. However, patients typically do not experience any pain during or after treatment and have reported limited to no side effects post-treatment. There may be mild redness or swelling, and in some instances numbness for a few days and up to one week after treatment. On average, women repeat treatment annually or up to every 18 months, but the lasting results will vary from patient to patient.
Experts suggest that PRP treatment in the form can increase blood flow, repair some tissue or cells in the penis to help repair responses, create new neural pathways to increase pleasure, and some patients may even experience penis enhancement. Like it’s female counterpart, this is an outpatient procedure and can often be done on a lunch break.
Local anesthesia is used for the ‘P’ shot as well, where a cream or ointment will be applied to the genital area, and local anesthesia may be included in the injection as well. After your blood is taken and placed in the centrifuge to isolate the PRP, it will be injected into the penile shaft in a series of four or five injections. Patients may be asked to take a penis pump home with them and use it for a few minutes daily for the first few weeks post-treatment to ensure adequate blood flow, but this will be determined by your provider on a case-by-case basis.
Both treatments are widely reported to be painless and have very little to zero side effects. In some instances there will be swelling, redness, bruising, or numbness, and in rare instances men and women reported infection, scarring, or cold sores which required additional doctors appointments. However, recovery is mild and should allow most or all patients to return to normal daily activities the same day, and at worst within a few days after the procedure.
Early results can be seen (for some) as early as within 24 hours of the first treatment, but some patients may require multiple treatments before seeing meaningful results. Patients are advised to refrain from sexual intercourse for a few days after the procedure to ensure no infections occur at the injection sites prior to healing fully and to try and limit sweating or chafing in the area for the first week after treatment.
