You may have heard the term platelet rich plasma therapy bandied about recently, and perhaps you are wondering about this procedure and its effectiveness. Let’s take a look at PRP therapy and how it can help you!
Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP therapy, has just recently come to the forefront as an effective facial rejuvenation treatment. It has long been used in other medical areas, including orthopedic and reconstructive medicine, along with dentistry. It is popular among athletes as a treatment for joint, tendon, tissue and other similar injuries, as it can reduce recovery time. Now, it is being used in the cosmetic surgery arena as an effective, non-invasive procedure that can:
• Improve skin texture
• Treat fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
• Plump under eye grooves and bags
• Add volume to the face, neck and hands
• Minimize wrinkles around the mouth
• Eliminate acne scars
Platelet rich plasma therapy is actually quite simple and quick—it can often be completed in about 20 minutes. First, blood is drawn, about the same amount as a blood draw. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge to separate the stem cells, growth factors, and platelets from the blood. After this platelet rich solution is obtained, it is then injected into the treatment areas. Often, a micro-needling procedure can be used along with platelet rich plasma therapy. The injection of the serum actually promotes healing and production of elastin and collagen to produce a rejuvenated appearance.
There are very few side effects from platelet rich plasma therapy. Because your own blood is being used, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction that can occur with synthetic substances. There is a possibility that you may experience some irritation, itching, or swelling after the procedure, however, these effects will usually subside over the next few days.
