Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, or PRP, is a relatively new cosmetic procedure that can help make you look younger and more vibrant.
PRP is a procedure that uses your own blood platelets to cause your body to rejuvenate, along with increasing the body’s production of collagen and elastin. These substances are integral to increasing the skin’s youthful look. Platelet are rich source of natural growth factor which are responsible for repair and recovery after an injury.
During the procedure, some of your blood is drawn. The blood is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the cells. The platelets from the blood are then processed again, with additional growth factors being added. Finally, this processed blood serum is then used for healing and skin rejuvenation.
There are several treatments using PRP therapy as the basis. Perhaps the most popular is known as a Dracula facial. During this treatment, the facial skin is punctured using micro-needles. The PRP serum is then applied to the micro-needled skin. The procedure will add volume to the face, along with increasing collagen and elastin production, to provide the skin with a youthful elasticity.
Often the Dracula treatment is combined with hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers to produce even better results. Also, when used in conjunction with dermal fillers, PRP can add volume to the face and other body areas, such as the hands, to bring back that youthful look.
Fat transfer procedures often use the same methods as PRP. Fat is suctioned away and processed in a similar manner as blood PRP. These fat cells are then injected into another body area to augment and accentuate it. Areas that commonly use fat transfer augmentation are the breasts and buttocks. The fat is often grafted, along with the blood platelets and growth factors, to speed up the healing and grafting process.
There are many advantages and benefits to the PRP therapy. For instance, because the body’s own blood is being used, there is little risk of an allergic reaction or rejection.
Additional benefits include the increase in collagen and elastin production that will lead to younger looking skin. Also, because the body’s rejuvenation process is emphasized, you will also be rewarded with skin that is glowing and healthy looking.
